SEPS Exchange: "Renewable Energy Practice-to-Policy Dialogue" in Yangon, Myanmar

The workshop “Micro hydro and decentralized renewable energy for Myanmar” will take place from 24 – 28 November 2014 in Yangon, Myanmar. The event is part of one of our SEPS exchange activitives and will be hosted by the Renewable Energy Association of Myanmar (REAM) and the Hydro Empowerment Network (HPNet).

Historically, Myanmar’s rural electrification efforts have not emphasized micro hydro or other types of decentralized energy generation as a key solution. When properly executed though, micro-hydropower is a cost-effective renewable energy resource that builds the capacity and leverages the participation of local communities to sustainably address their own energy needs.

This workshops seeks to inspire Myanmar’s policymakers, small power producers and rural development actors to take a closer look at proven decentralized renewable energy (DRE) strategies in the region, as they initiate their own energy planning processes. The workshop will give Myanmar’s decision-makers and key stakeholders an opportunity to interface with the key actors of successful micro hydro programs in Indonesia, Nepal and Sri Lanka, in order to strategize a way forward for small power producers in Myanmar using DRE, especially community-scale micro-hydropower.
