Los Pinos Biogas Production Demonstration Unit Inauguration

The inauguration of the Biogas Demonstration Unit in Los Pinos will take place on Monday, October 3rd at 14:00 hours (UTC-3). From that moment on, the use of biogas produced from municipal waste, animal manure, dairy industry waste and crop residues will officially start, with the purpose of providing energy for households in Los Pinos community in the Balcarce municipality, as well as to provide electricity for the community water pump system. 

The grounds for this project are rooted in the fact that small rural communities in Argentina usually far from urban areas where reliable power grid and waste management centres are localized. Therefore, some of the main challenges in these communities are to find the proper alternatives for the management of waste and to ensure reliable access to electricity.

The team behind the project Los Pinos identified the potential of the region to harness high volumes of biomass feedstock for bioenergy generation through the agricultural and livestock activities that are developed near the community. As a result of the joint effort of the neighbours of Los Pinos, the municipality and a group of public and private institutions and companies, an anaerobic biodigester was installed that treats organic residues from neighboring agricultural activities and produce biogas, which in turn is used to power the pumps of the drink water system of the village.  

In the last weeks, the neighbours and the project team has been making the finishing touches at the site in preparation of this official event.

La inauguración de la Unidad Demostrativa de Biogás en Los Pinos tendrá lugar el lunes 3 de octubre a las 14:00 horas (UTC-3). A partir de ese momento, se iniciará oficialmente el uso del biogás producido a partir de residuos municipales, abono animal, residuos de la industria láctea y residuos de cultivos, con el fin de proveer energía a los hogares de la comunidad de Los Pinos, en Balcarce, así como también para proporcionar electricidad al sistema de bombeo de agua de la comunidad. 

Las bases de este proyecto están vinculadas con el hecho de que las pequeñas comunidades rurales de Argentina cuentan con un suministro inestable de energía y se encuentran lejos de los centros para tratamiento adecuado de residuos. Por lo tanto, entre los principales retos de estas comunidades es encontrar la forma adecuada de hacer frente a las malas prácticas de gestión de residuos que se aplican habitualmente y que dan lugar a numerosos problemas ambientales y asegurar un suministro fiable de energía. 

El equipo detrás del proyecto Los Pinos identificó el potencial de la región para aprovechar altos volúmenes de materia orgánica para la generación de bioenergía a través de sus actividades agrícolas y ganaderas. Como resultado del esfuerzo conjunto de los vecinos de Los Pinos, el municipio y un grupo de instituciones y empresas públicas y privadas, se instaló un biodigestor anaeróbico en esa región de Balcarce (Argentina), el cual trata los residuos orgánicos de actividades agrícolas y produce biogás, el cual a su vez es usado para impulsar las bombas para el abastecimiento de agua potable de la comunidad.

En las últimas semanas los vecinos y el equipo del proyecto han estado muy ocupados dando los últimos retoques para el evento oficial del próximo Lunes.
