Case Studies

Once any project supported by WISIONS is successfully completed it becomes part of our body of case studies. Here, we systematically reflect upon the outcomes and impacts on people’s livelihoods.

Lack of trust in and information about decentralized renewable energy solutions is still a main challenge to accelerating just energy transitions in contexts of the global south. WISIONS case studies provide practical illustrations of what works – and what doesn’t – for driving local sustainable development of people by improving access to clean energy.

With over 130 innovative energy projects completed since WISIONS founding in 2004, we built up a considerable amount of knowledge that is open to use for every researcher and practitioner.

Knowledge Exchanges

A special subtype of projects are knowledge exchanges. Their aim is to facilitate South-South knowledge exchange between practitioners, organisations and other stakeholders. We firmly believe that access to knowledge empowers individuals to become the drivers of their own energy transformations. That's why we have supported nearly 30 exchanges so far.

Exchange: Knowledge and Advocacy for Productive End Use of Micro Hydro Projects

This exchange activity aims to contribute to the sustainability of micro hydro plants in Southern and Southeast Asia by increasing the load factors and financial bases through the implementation of proven best practices for productive end uses.

Exchange: Capacity Building for Micro Hydro Electronic Load Controller Technicians in South/Southeast Asia

This exchange activity aimed to increase the capacity of local engineers and technicians to deal with electronic load controller operation and maintenance

Rehabilitation and Upgrading of an Existing Micro Hydro Plant (MHP) in the Philippines

To demonstrate restoration of a community-managed MHP and advocate for restoration of other MHPs in the region

Establishment of Demand-Driven Sustainable Improved Watermill Cluster in the State of Uttarakhand, India

This project aims to improve the traditional water mills by replacing wooden equipment in order to make them more efficient and to demonstrate the importance of the technology in the mountainous region. Furthermore, the supply and demand gap of products (such as grains) processed by the water mills could be closed by efficient production and effective marketing.

Demonstration of Sustainable Low Head Pico-Hydro to Deliver Enhanced Rural Energy Services to the Terai Region of Nepal

To demonstrate feasibility of a low-head propeller turbine in low-lying unelectrified communities

Extension of Micro Hydro Power for Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims to demonstrate the viability of an innovative business model for the bulk sale of energy produced by a micro hydro plant to nearby villages, which would contribute to the sustainability of the plant by providing increased finances from the sale of this excess energy.

Exchange: Practice-to-Policy Exchange for Grid-Connected Micro Hydro Power in South/Southeast Asia

This exchange activity aims to nurture knowledge exchange between multi-actors for grid-connected micro hydro technology across the region of South and Southeast Asia and to enable members of the Hydro Empowerment Network (HPNET) to operate renewable energy technologies apart from the national grid.

Setting Up an Innovative Jaggery Processing Cluster Level CFC Model through a Thermal Biomass Gasifier System in the State of Karnataka

The project aims to demonstrate the integration of thermal biomass gasifiers (efficiency > 70%) in the jaggery units for heating, with the aim of making the production process more energy efficient and user friendly, as well as improving the working environment and the quality of the produce.

Biogas Generation through Biomass Production in a "Smart School" in the Lower Northern Region of Thailand

The aim of this project is to use food and agricultural waste, as well as animal dung, to generate biogas energy for producing/cooking school lunches at seven schools in Thailand.
