Case Studies

Once any project supported by WISIONS is successfully completed it becomes part of our body of case studies. Here, we systematically reflect upon the outcomes and impacts on people’s livelihoods.

Lack of trust in and information about decentralized renewable energy solutions is still a main challenge to accelerating just energy transitions in contexts of the global south. WISIONS case studies provide practical illustrations of what works – and what doesn’t – for driving local sustainable development of people by improving access to clean energy.

With over 130 innovative energy projects completed since WISIONS founding in 2004, we built up a considerable amount of knowledge that is open to use for every researcher and practitioner.

Knowledge Exchanges

A special subtype of projects are knowledge exchanges. Their aim is to facilitate South-South knowledge exchange between practitioners, organisations and other stakeholders. We firmly believe that access to knowledge empowers individuals to become the drivers of their own energy transformations. That's why we have supported nearly 30 exchanges so far.

Biogas Generation through Biomass Production in a "Smart School" in the Lower Northern Region of Thailand

The aim of this project is to use food and agricultural waste, as well as animal dung, to generate biogas energy for producing/cooking school lunches at seven schools in Thailand.

Community Managed Energy Service for Vegetable Market Chain

This project aims to demonstrate the viability of a community managed irrigation system in rural Nepal, using a photovoltaic pumping system to increase production levels and also enhance the quality of the vegetables produced.

Solar Water Pumping in urban areas of Argentina

This project aims to install a solar pumping system in order to maintain an adequate flow of water to a building's rooftop water tank which will, in turn, ensure the constant provision of water to the apartments in the building.

Removing Barriers to Greenhouse Gas Mitigation in Medium-Scale Agricultural Livestock Activities in Mexico

Exchange: "Dragon of the New Flame": Drama and Art to Support Community Engagement During the Introduction of Biogas Technology

To expand the methodology and develop a manual for the arts-based implementation of biogas projects in marginalised Latin American communities

Improving Cacao Production and Processing While Meeting Cooking Fuel Demand in Ecuador (CRECER)

To customise biodigesters and solar dryers to meet cooking fuel demand and increase the quality and value of the cacao bean, as well as providing sustainable cacao cultivation training

Solar Mobility in Andean highlands of Argentina

This project aims to introduce and test electric bikes and electric motorcycles as mobility options for short and medium distances in the Andean highlands of Argentina.

Exchange: Community Exchange and Capacity-Building in Energy Alternatives for Food Production

The main objective was to link the concepts of energy sovereignty and food sovereignty using a two-pronged approach: the provision of hands-on capacity-building in sustainable energy technologies for food production and setting up a participatory dialogue among civil society organisations in Colombia.

Exchange: Micro Hydro for Myanmar: Practice-to-Policy Dialogue with Indonesia, Nepal, and Sri Lanka

To facilitate dialogue between decision-makers in Myanmar and their counterparts in countries that have successfully implemented micro-hydro
